January 2019
Our Co-op on the Coast

Arena Market and Cafe / Coastal Organics Cooperative

Welcome to 2019, Our 10th Anniversary Year

Thanks for being involved with the co-op. Several key staff members took vacations during the holidays and the remaining employees ensured we kept the doors open and the coffee flowing during our reduced hours. Comments I heard confirmed that the community really appreciated our efforts. Thanks to everyone involved.

2019 is our tenth anniversary of forming the co-op and opening Arena Market and Cafe. We incorporated on January 24, 2009 when we registered Coastal Organics Cooperative, Inc., with the State of California. We’ll remind you of other events in our 10-year history throughout the year.

Financial progress has been a focus for me during most of last year. We renewed our major development loan with the Economic Development Financing Corporation of Mendocino County. We negotiated a lease renewal with our landlord, Garcia Lodge #240, thanks to the diligent work of Kirk Mobert. As is their practice, the Lodge will consider the lease at their next business meeting. And we have worked with our information systems to ensure we price items that may go up or down will offer competitive prices and still take in enough money to pay our bills.

Fundraising to refresh our equipment will happen again soon. As we have done a few times before, we will be encouraging member economic participation* to support our capital funding. We have two major needs: 1) updating equipment, most of which is being heavily used due to our busy cafe and kitchen, 2) increasing our product inventory to better meet the needs of our shoppers. More information will come out shortly, but if you want to help us sooner, please talk with Natalie, our GM.

Our new stove arrived but has had some teething issues. Thanks to Rufus for working with the manufacturer to fix the oven in our new stove under warranty. We’ve made good progress, but being far away from the source of parts and expertise has slowed things down a bit. Expect a bump up in baked goods when things start running smoothly.

Welcome to 2019. And thanks to our more than 500 members that keep the co-op going.

Cheers

Message from your GM

Happy New Year! I want to start off by saying how much we appreciate our loyal members bearing with us through our three week winter hours period. We are very excited to be back to our regular hours of operation. We know it was a long three weeks, but time off gave us a chance to begin making plans for the new year. We hope to increase our housemade goods and do as much in-house as possible. We have been brainstorming, testing recipes and gathering goods to see out our new visions. Look for housemade salad dressings, healthy baked goods, fancy tarts filled with local fruits and more soon! Let's make this year leading up to our ten year anniversary the best yet!
